PROFINET over APL and SPE in 2026
June 2026
An overview of the status of Ethernet-APL and the integration of PROFINET with Single Pair Ethernet (SPE).
APL is now market-ready and well-established in process automation: intrinsically safe, long distances, direct integration of field devices into Ethernet/PROFINET. Objective: to bring Ethernet right out to the field (sensors/actuators) and replace traditional 4–20 mA/HART.
SPE, on the other hand, is designed for applications requiring higher power and flexible power supply (e.g. factory automation, automotive engineering, building automation).
Main difference: power supply concept (APL = limited & intrinsically safe, SPE = flexible & more powerful with power negotiation).
Overall advantages: less cabling, simple integration, higher data availability, digitalisation right out into the field.
Status:
APL: available + certified + ecosystem in place
SPE: specified + devices under development + certification to begin
