The security experts at PI have developed a comprehensive security concept for automation and described it in specifications.
Now, three PROFINET security classes can be implemented depending on the requirements. One component of Class 1 is the signing of the GSDML file to ensure authenticity and integrity. The signing is done using proven methods such as XML Signature and XAdES B-LT extension.

The signature object is packaged together with the GSD content into a file called GSDX.
PI provides a signature tool that signs GSDML files and generates GSDX files. The public validation key is provided as a public key certificate. The signing of GSDML files is an initial use case for certificates, with more to follow with secured PROFINET communication in SecurityClass 2/3.

GSDX pursues the goals packaging of any files and their referenced resources in a single container, validation of integrity and authenticity of packaged files, linking the origin of a file to a vendor or publisher and enable the integration of devices into an engineering tool.
